Gisteren werden 140 keramiek objecten van Picasso geveild bij Sotheby’s in Londen, opbrengst bijna 2,5 miljoen euro. De objecten vormden een representatief overzicht van het keramische werk van Picasso [1881-1962]. Als hij in 1946 het echtpaar George en Suzanne Ramie ontmoet die in het Zuid-Franse Vallauris een pottenbakkerij runnen, raakt hij niet alleen met hen bevriend maar wordt ook gegrepen door de klei. Net als bij zijn andere werk is zijn werkdrift ongeëvenaard en tot zijn dood maakt hij meer dan 4000 objecten. Dat wil zeggen, meesterpottenbakker Jules Agard [in het filmpje op de achtergrond aan het werk] draait de vazen, kannen etc. en Picasso vervormt en/of decoreert ze.
De thematiek is, zoals in al het werk van de meester, controversieel. Stillevens en portretten wisselen af met stierengevechten en obscene taferelen. Het meest in het oog springt de speelsheid en humor. Zo worden vazen met het grootste gemak portretten, een handvat van een kan transformeert tot een slang, de rand van een bord kan dienst doen om het publiek bij een stierengevecht een plek te geven, als nest van een vogel of als het haar van de geportretteerde vrouw.
